  1. This is the best cookbook software I’ve used.

PROS: Highly customizable appearance of displayed and printed recipes. Ability to print cookbooks or export to Microsoft WORD for further formatting before printing. Very easy to capture recipes from text sources (i.e., internet). Competent handling of ingredient definitions and nutritional information. Good organization of recipes into chapters and multilevel sub-chapters. Good ability to assign tags to recipes and define and save searches (such as “christmas” and “cookies”). Ability to include a defined recipe as an ingredient in another recipe with a single click needed to view the included recipe. Ability to include heading lines in both ingredient lists and procedures (i.e., “For Sauce”, “For Filling”).

CONS: Could have better mechanism for coordinating SERVINGS and YIELD information so that the printed/displayed recipe and nutritional information serving size look better (see later below). Could have better means for defining multiple ingredients and procedure sections so that the procedure could immediately follow the ingredients for a specific section such as “Sauce” or “Filling”.

Capturing a recipe is simple. You copy the recipe to the clipboard and then paste it into the program. Then you highlight individual sections such as title, ingredients, procedure, etc. and assign them to the appropriate categories and in a minute the recipe capture is complete.

Managing yield and servings could be better. If you have a recipe that makes 48 cookies you can specify YIELDS: 48 cookies. In this case a nutritional serving would be one whole batch of 48 cookies. You could also add SERVINGS: 48 and then the nutritional serving size would be one cookie. Unfortunately the recipe display/printout would awkwardly state SERVINGS: 48 and YIELDS: 48 cookies. The nutritional info would say SERVING SIZE: 1/48 of recipe. Yes you can customize to only display SERVINGS or YIELD, but in some recipes like cookies you want to show YIELD with a nutritional serving size of something other than a whole batch. In other recipes such as a casserole, you want to display SERVINGS and show a nutritional serving size as one SERVING.

All in all, I’m very happy with the program but there is always room for improvement…

  2. It’s so easy to create recipes and capture them from online. My only gripe is that it comes loaded with recipes I will probably never use.

  3. I have used Living Cookbook for years. I currently use LC2008. All of the reasons that I love LC are listed in other reviews. I am a home cook and LC has made my life easier. It is an easy program to use and the support is WONDERFUL! I have always either found answers to my questions by using the help files, searching the forums or by asking a question and receiving a VERY QUICK reply. I highly recommend Living Cookbook.

  4. This software is great. I would highly recommend it. It has met all my expectations. The tutorials make it easy to use. It stores recipes, creates menus and shopping lists and has easy search capabilities. Good Value for the price.

  5. The main problem with this program is this insane registration requirements and total lack of support. The registration is the same hassle as installing windows and the only support is through a forum where you have to register for that too. Also the inface is clunky and looks about 20 years old. None of the pieces really work together On the up side you can export stuff to a lot of different formats so when you get something better, as I am, you won;t need to reenter you recipies
