Oh good grief, don’t pay a lot for some of these video converters. Use Mac the Ripper (do a Google search and you’ll find a download link) for ripping DVDs. Use MPEG Streamclip ( http://www.squared5.com ) to convert the ripped DVD files to a format for editing. You’ll need Apple’s MPEG-2 Playback component to get MPEG Streamclip to work ($20). Do a search for Apple MPEG-2 Playback Component and you’ll find a link. You can buy it from Apple. So you should only pay a total of $20 to rip your DVD and make clips for editing. Don’t pay any more than that.

If you don’t want to pay anything, look for the DVD ripper/converter called “Handbrake.” It’s free, but it takes longer to convert/rip. But if you want to go totally free, Handbrake works on the Mac.

iMovie 09 is great for making fan videos, as well as Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro. iMovie 09 is probably already on your Mac if it’s relatively new. If not you can buy it as part of the iLife suite. Final Cut Express is $200 and is very sophisticated and will allow you to make some fantastic videos. But if you don’t want to pay that, iMovie is great as well. Hope this helps.
